Well, guess what, it has been several months since we last saw Andy in the office for an official Invisalign visit and we have not heard a peep out of him about his treatment. That is good! Invisalign as a technique has almost no emergency issues. We don't get loose brackets, wires poking the cheeks and tongue or soreness like braces. The forces are gentle and gradual. Tomorrow Andy comes in for his first time after receiving his aligners six weeks ago. Every six weeks or so the Invisalign patient comes in for 3 new aligners. We check the progress of the previous appliances and fit the new ones...takes only one minute, usually. Some visits we may need to do IPR-Interproximal Reduction- if the teeth are too tight and won't slide over. This only occurs in tight, crowded cases, not spaced cases like Andy's.

Andy has all four of his wisdom teeth, or third molars as dentist's call them, impacted under the bone and locked from coming is normally. There just is no room for them in Andy's mouth (you really thought he had a very big mouth didn't you!) as is the case in most people we see. Adding to the complexity of Andy's case is the presence of an impacted canine or cuspid tooth in the upper left side side of his mouth, just under his eye. That is why they call it the "eye tooth" because it grows right up under the eye and usually erupts into place at around 10-11 years old...except in Andy's case, it didn't.
